Interactive Retrieval for Syntax, Semantik and Layout

Problem

In classical information retrieval research, the system-oriented viewdominated for a long time. In this view, users formulatethe query and then judge the elements of the ranked result list with respect to theirrelevance. This kind of information retrieval requires an explicit query formulation and leads in this way often only to a finding from already known and formerly stored data. Thus itdoes not contribute frequently to the elimination of the information need which underlies a query. Therefore this form of the information retrieval does not satisfy actually the need of communication and interaction of the user at the execution of tasks or the solution of problems.

Approach

In a classical retrieval processthe relevant information objects for the satisfaction of an information need are known in the rarest cases. Therefore an information processin the case of which the searching one can be controlled from contents-related (semantic) points of view as title, index or category on the functional level will occur. But also factors as layout, similarity to other found information objects et cetera will influence the search. Consequently a retrieval-system must pursue on the system-oriented sideat first a narrow integration of the representation of syntax, semantics and layout of the managed information objects. These extensive connotations can be used then for the queryin particular for the visualization, presentation and manipulation of the query results.
Furthermore also interactive-oriented functions must be realized on the user-oriented sideof the system design. Functions which help the users to characterize theirinformation deficit more precisely on the different meta-levels of the information search belong to that. Through dialog tools and the flexible visualization possibilities the user can analyze the respective result more quickly and drive forward the search more purposefully.
For the research of this theme a further development of the Daffodil-system for a flexibly configurable, interactive IR-system is supposed to be elaborated. An evaluation with end users follows then.
